Bedjacket

T he bedjacket is a common women's garment. It served as a covering for the stays and for the sleeves of the chemise. An example of this garment can be seen on the character "Mrs. Cameron" in the movie "Last of the Mohicans". We typically make the bedjacket of linen sheeting. The bedjacket can be made to reflect the social station of the wearer by the fabrics and trims chosen. For instance, a lady might have a fine, printed or embroidered linen, or if she especially wanted to show off her wealth, a hand printed India Cotton (Calicoe). We normally make the bedjacket in natural or white linen sheeting, either of which can be worn as-is or garment-dyed to your preference. You may also want to choose different fabric, closures, or trims. Similar garments to the bedjacket are the Sacque and the Caraco, which can be made to your specifications.

Apron

T he apron was worn over the petticoat to protect it from soiling. The apron was usually rather narrow, short, and not very full. The everyday apron was often of a coarse fabric, but was often striped or checked. White linen aprons were popular since white was easy to clean by boiling. Our white aprons are made of a variety of woven cotton checks and stripes.

Petticoat

T he petticoat of the 1770's is the same garment that we would call a skirt today - it wasn't until the 1800's that the petticoat came to be thought of as an undergarment. The petticoat was made of coarse linen, tow or wool (safer around the fire), with finer fabrics used by the wealthier folk. The petticoat was worn at a length reaching to about 4"-8" from the floor, sometimes with decorative tucks near the hem. In colder weather more than one petticoat would be worn for added warmth. Our petticoats are made from wool, linen, fustian or cotton as you desire. As noted above, the wool petticoats will be somewhat safer around the fire, but ALL natural fabrics require care of the wearer when working near open flames, as they burn very well!
